AI Use Policy

Last updated: April 2026

Markable is designed in full compliance with the UK Government's Principles for AI Use in Marking, published by the Department for Education in 2024 (available at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/principles-of-ai-use-in-marking).

1. Compliance with government principles: Markable has been designed from the ground up to comply with all current UK Government principles for AI use in marking. Teachers using Markable can be confident they are working within the boundaries set by government guidance.

2. AI as assistant only — not a marker: The AI in Markable does not mark or grade student work. It analyses scripts and provides: observations on where students have demonstrated relevant knowledge and skills; identification of strengths and areas for development; suggested band ranges as a starting point for teacher review. The AI never awards a final mark or grade.

3. Teacher responsibility is absolute:In accordance with government principles, all final marking decisions — including the award of every mark and grade — are the sole and non-delegable responsibility of the teacher. Markable's workflow is designed to enforce this: no mark can be finalised without explicit teacher review and confirmation.

4. Human review is mandatory: Markable requires teachers to review all AI feedback before any assessment is finalised. The system does not allow AI feedback to be passed directly to students without teacher review.

5. Transparency with students:Schools should inform students that AI tools are used to assist teachers in the feedback process. This should be communicated in accordance with the school's own AI use and assessment policies.

6. Limitations of AI: AI feedback may contain errors or omissions. It reflects patterns learned from BTEC Applied Law mark schemes, examiner reports, and past papers, but it is not infallible. Teachers must apply their professional judgement to all AI output.

7. No bias or discrimination:Markable's AI is designed to assess the content of student work only, not the identity of the student. No personal data about students is processed by the AI.

8. Ongoing compliance: Markable is committed to monitoring and maintaining compliance with evolving UK Government guidance on AI in education. This policy will be updated as guidance develops.
